. We all know women have a plethora of options when it comes to what they put on their body, but the range is nearly endless. From the traditional cocktail dress to sports jerseys and cartoon-style pyjamas, there's no telling what you can find in a woman's wardrobe. The fashion industry is constantly evolving and expanding, with trends from different countries inspiring one another and sparking controversy — the latest being athleisure wear.
The athleisure trend, which is the name for clothing that combines workout clothes and streetwear, originated in 2008 when Nike began to market its Women's Air Max shoe called the Nike Women's Air Force 1. Adidas responded by releasing its first line of women's shoemaking athletic fashions 'Adizero', which is a style of sportswear consisting of an Adidas garment with a coloured accent and seams.
The trend has been supercharged in the last year by celebrities like Selena Gomez, Serena Williams and Rihanna. This prompted other fashion brands to begin collaboration with athletic brands for their own athleisure lines, although none have been released yet. The most logical place for these companies to start is with women's clothing. Women's clothing is a much more common item — after all, it is not uncommon for women to wear two items at once. As an example, a woman might wear a jacket to work and a pair of jeans outside of work.
As the market for women's clothing begins to grow and expand, expect to see more fashion companies jump into it. While most companies have been hesitant in releasing their own lines of athleisure wear, Nike will likely be the only company to release more than just one line. In fact, Nike has already released one line of athletic gear called Nike Sportswear that contains everything from underwear to running shoes. If Nike is able to gain such success with its Sportswear brand, there is no telling what other companies will follow suit — or what they'll do with athleisure clothing altogether.
